Sunday News

IT’S SUNDAY, stretch out, take it easy and let’s look over some of the less media-hyped comic book projects being planned.

It may be heavenly day where you are but it appears there's a lot of horror and bad guys-in-the-making still being published in comics over in the US of A. Read on...

Nancy In Hell for TV?

The Image Comics series Nancy in Hell is being pitch to assorted television network executives as final decisions are made on it becoming available on the small screen. If so the series would mix old and news stories from the comic book.

Created by El Torres, Nancy in Hell takes the view that if there are no good girls anymore they can’t go to heaven when they die. Thus when heroine Nancy snuffs it and reawakens in a creepy landscape to find decomposing lost souls, demons lurking in the shadows, outcasts, chainsaws, booze, and certain doom she obviously wants out. Even Lucifer’s on her side! Even if she succeeds, the mystery remains who wanted Nancy dead and why? The title is now in its third series.

Glad All Over?

Gladstone's School for World Conquerors, the top-secret academy for the children of the world's greatest super villains got off to a good start at Image Comics. Now creator Mark Andrew Smith and artist Armand Villavert Jr. are looking to produce a second collection, crowd funded by a Kickstarter campaign.

As part of the incentive patrons are being offered the first trade paperback as a downloadable PDF as well as the first issue from series 2. That’s around 200 pages. For more information visit: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1940696606/gladstones-school-for-world-conquerors-2-hardcover

Widowed

Mike Wolfer notable for his comic book work on Night of the Living Dead, Friday the 13th, Lady Death and Crossed: Badlands has developed a cult following for one of his own earlier projects, Widow.

Created in 1992, Widow tells the tale of Emma, the unfortunate recipient of genetic modification to infuse her human DNA with that of an arachnid. She also gained the instincts and cravings of a spider, along with nightmarish, physical transformations in the process. Wolfer self-published the first issue of a spin-off series, titled Widow: Progeny. Written by Wolfer and illustrated by Karl Moline, it was never completed due to the workload he began to take on at Avatar. Progeny is one of those stories that I always wished had seen print, and now it’s finally happening,” explained Wolfer. “Back in ’97, at the height of the Ground Zero Comics’ Widow series, I was ready to expand the Widow mythos into new territory, but the move to Avatar, and a bunch of new priorities, left Progeny unfinished and forgotten.

"With Progeny, I show how a single encounter with Emma is like the match that starts a wildfire. In fact, Emma does not appear in Progeny, but her legacy is the impetus for the story.”

Illustrated in black and white Progeny tells the tale of Katy, a shipwreck survivor on a Caribbean island overrun by half-human, half-spider mutations. When a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue team crashes on the island, Katy must lead the survivors as they attempt to defend themselves from the terrors that lurk in the island’s dark interior. Art for issues #2 and #3 is being supplied by Roy Allan Martinez. “When I saw Roy’s intricate, dark, and downright creepy art style, I knew that he was the perfect person to take over the series.” Commented Wolfer.

The series will be published by Mike Wolfer Entertainment and as with many projects these days there is a Kickstarter campaign involved. Thus, for more information visit: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/149983649/widow-progeny-from-mike-wolfer-entertainment
