Lucky Luke Book 50: Seven Stories

Lucky Luke Book 50: Seven Stories by Rene Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook

FIFTY COMIC Book albums, that’s an impressive number. True we’re talking books that have been published in Europe for a good many decades, so the production side shouldn’t be a problem, but what a success story that is not only in these modern times were long runs are rare but Lucky Luke never gained a foothold until coming out under this publisher. Humour works, for all ages, because it’s kids reading these not just nerdy grown-ups.

So something special for the fiftieth book? The Daltons Brothers gather all Luke’s other foes and make his life a misery, only for all those he’s saved over the decades to run to his rescue at the last minute? No nothing so predictable. Instead we have what the title reads, Seven Stories, a collection of shorter strips by Goscinny and Morris instead of one long epic one, and it’s all fun as ever, but a welcome change of pace too meaning that any running gags don’t outstay their welcome.

First published as 7 Histoires de Lucky Luke and as recently as 1986, one presumes the strips come from an earlier period. Morris’s art shifts subtly in style with each strip as he develops his earlier Luke big screen cartoon style already more in tune with the newspaper strip style alongside some Mad Magazine movement and expression, all gradually moving towards the iconic stylisations we think of with the character. Toothaches, cabbages and cattle rustling, Wyatt Earp and more are what you get to read about in this entertaining package.
