Wolverine: Origins Volume 2 – Savior
Wolverine: Origins Volume 2 – Savior, by Daniel Way & Steve Dillon, Marvel
COLLECTING WOLVERINE: Origins #6 – 10 from a few years back this is a mid-story collection: something’s gone on, and there’s a conclusion due, but in the midst of it these collected issues have Marvel’s clawed hero chasing here and there in search of a son he never knew he had.
But then there are a great many things Wolverine never knew that are now coming back to him as he battles Russian mutant Omega Red, tries to save a young female mutant called Jubilee’s life (look kids, I’m sorry if I’m not hip with characters that you think have been around some time, but I come from a world where book editors are paid to put this supplementary detail in at least an appendix), and keeps having flashback memories of his days as a spy (cue present day involvement from S.H.I.E.L.D. and an intriguing cameo from the Black Widow).
It evokes a modern version Manchurian Candidate feel to it story wise and for those who like that kind of stuff there are plenty of bloodied bodies left dying (though the fight scenes that lead up to those things happening tend towards being curiously off panel).
It reads well, and you can’t fault the actual figure drawings, but modern US comics publishing’s preoccupations with padding out stories to fit prescribed lengths means this collection lacks the impact it could have had if reined in at a shorter length.
