XIII Book 17: The Irish Version
XIII Book 17: The Irish Version, by Jean Van Hamme & Jean Giraud, Cinebook

A CURIOUS collection. This pieces together the early story that lead to a young man becoming XIII. Taking in the Irish conflict there are politics and bloodshed.
For those of us who were children and felt the repercussions of IRA terrorist bombs going off in England it was hard to understand those times. It still is in some respects. Van Hamme must have felt that too for he felt the need to include an introduction to the book, offering historical perspective. That is done, generally without sensationalism, and that it all ties into the whole XIII mystery neatly, is respected.
Illustrated by the late Jean Giraud (known better to some under his own aliases as Moebius and Gir) in a straight, some might say documentary style, it is naturally well crafted, though one wonders by William Vance the series usual artist was not involved.
Very readable, but because of the subject matter I can’t say I enjoyed it.
