XIII Book 9: For Maria
XIII Book 9: For Maria, by Jean Van Hamme & William Vance, Cinebook
XIII (I refuse to call him Jason McFly because I’m waiting for Van Hamme to pull the rug under that belief any book soon) is down in South America with Major Jones, the two sunning themselves and reacquainting themselves with the Marquis and Betty, when a message comes though that his wife needs rescuing... And it’s a wife he never knew about!
Our presumption all along during this tale is that it’s a set-up and not another forgotten alias of our hero’s, nonetheless he goes out looking and find a former step-mother instead, and more bullets flying than are good for anyone.
The tale revolves around a series of stereotypical corrupt political shenanigans of constant military takeovers vs guerrillas funded by communist regimes as XIII proceeds to at least rescue this woman who’s supposedly his wife. It gives Vance a chance to draw new exotic localities and Van Hamme simply uses the scenario as a backdrop, developing his lead characters further still, subtly, but in intriguing ways.
