XIII Book 4: Spads, by Jean Van Hamme & William Vance, Cinebook

LAST round XIII was trying to escape, now he’s in hiding; decked out in khaki on training manoeuvres in some nameless Asian jungle, trying to find out more about his latest false identity, one Ross Tanner. While all that’s going on, his enemies and allies gather in Washington and as they parlez together reveal some of the truth behind XIII’s real identity... Me, I remain cautious and wonder if we’re being thrown more red herrings to keep our scent off the trail.
Casual reading isn’t an option if you want to pick up on all the facts presented. However, even with a couple of old guys and a middle-aged general just hanging round a bedroom it still reads like a thriller.
On top of that the book opens with a lengthy recap of where we’ve been and where we’re possibly at and that makes it quite a good jump-on place if you’ve never read any of the previous books.
Van Hamme’s characters, for all their mysteries, are coming together and becoming more fully rounded, while Vance’s detailed art just keeps getting better.
