Thorgal Book 7: The Master of the Mountains, by Jean Van Hamme & Grzegorz Rosinski, Cinebook

THIS SHORT volume begins with Thorgal, our Viking hero, trying to find a safe passage from some snow covered mountains, only to fall in with a young lad named Torric who's escaped the titular Master of the Mountains, a harsh despot in these parts.
Initially there is the feel of Robert E Howard's Conan short story The Frost Giant's Daughter to it but soon changes, using the principles of magic (or excuse of it) to do so and taking us into the genre of science fiction - that Thorgal always just about manages to cohabit precariously.
In truth it's a traditional ghost story in all but name, just extended. Oh, you may well guess some of what will happen before it comes to pass as this story heads towards its conclusion, but there's no doubting that it's expertly done, with a fair degree of food for thought along the way.
An uncharacteristic Thorgal book but a good stand alone one to start off with as it is not soaked in continuity as many others in the series are.
