Betlegeuse Book 3: The Other
Betlegeuse Book 3: The Other, by Leo, Cinebook
LEO BRINGS his Betelgeuse series to a conclusion with this book and it ties in some aspects of his earlier Alderbran collection.
There are a number of happenings off panel that are reported in conversations later to explain how characters who were virtually at war with each other have renewed their old allegiances, but this is valid enough for it allows the focus to remain firmly on Kim throughout the tale.
When we first met her as a young girl with a crush on Mark in the Alderbran series we assumed he was the lead character and she just had a walk-on part. The roles not only changed, they developed and became a theme within the epic.
In brief, Kim and her party have escaped their plight in the caves and now seek to return to their home base on planet. Then one of the panda-like Ium take her to meet the mantris, only it’s not the one we saw in the cave but another one with some very sharp teeth who decides to put them to use on Kim. Follow this by her being rescued by a small spacecraft with an alien named Sven inside, and over the next batch of pages revelations are made that include inter-species symbiotic relationships, alien non-contact and sexual attraction.
There is a less adventuresome aspect to this conclusion, and Leo’s philosophical and political leanings are kept in check, allowing this to be a story about the continuing maturing of a woman called Kim.
