Valerian and Laureline Book 4: Welcome to Alflolol, by Pierre Christin & Jean-Claude Mézières, Cinebook

FOR TWO hundred years Tehnorog has been mined and harvested to feed the peoples of Earth as they travel among the stars. It is also a profitable business. However, when a spaceship with some very large aliens inside come into its orbit life as the earthlings know it will begin to take a turn, and for the worse.

The aliens are in fact the planet’s original inhabitants coming back from a lengthy tour of the space-ways themselves – it’s just that the longevity of their ageing process is different and their time away has been but a short visit to them. The fact that they are not an angry race of people is a blessing in disguise, not least because more ships are returning home to the planet that is really called Alflolol.

Galaxity agents Valerian and Laureline are present attempting to make the peace: prototcol insists the planet’s original inhabitants are allowed to return but it is not long before it becomes akin to native Americans stuck on a reservation – That this book first appeared in the 1970s when those people began trying to establish their rights cannot go unnoticed. It’s a difficult subject matter, especially where jokes are played out to make humans the butt of these misunderstandings, but also done without preaching overtly.

A decent read in trying to put over a difficult theme and you may apply a small wry smile to your face at the book’s conclusion.
