Spooks Book 4: The 46th State
Spooks Book 4: The 46th State, by Xavier Dorison, Fabien Nury & Christian Ross, Cinebook
64 PAGES of sandy browns, sun-kissed oranges and bloody reds do not a pretty picture paint in the conclusion to this turn of the century saga of a Cuba seeking independence, but dependent on the goodwill of the trading arm of the USA.
Tears of blood weep from the statue of a Madonna, a man made artefact from which an unexplained miracle appears, establishes from the outset that this will be a tale of contradictions, each brought to bear upon each other, and perhaps some shady deal needing to be made for a status quo of sorts to prevail rather than a bloody massacre where everyone may be to blame.
Socialist ideals go hand in hand with El Santero, the local brand of voodoo, as deals are done, violence is met, and Morton Chapel and his Spooks try to make some sense of it all.
In this hard-won adventure there is some genuine political history amidst entering the realms of the fantastique, and it’s driven to its conclusion by those two worlds colliding, in between which the creators expose their characters' personalities and inner motivations a little more to draw us in further.
