Spooks Book 2: Century Club
Spooks Book 2: Century Club, by Xavier Dorison, Fabien Nury & Christian Ross, Cinebook
GUNFIGHTS IN the streets, dark enchantments behind closed doors, people lost out of their minds and a story stretching back in time make this a compelling read.
The president’s latest grouping of Spooks has gathered to put an end to the eldritch menace festering along the Eastern coast, and it’s all the fault of that black magician, the world’s wickedest man, and a Brit to boot, Aleister Crowley.
Member of American high society has been offered even more earthbound rewards, it may make them less upstanding citizens than they were before but they make their Faustian pact and have become part of the Century Club regardless. It’s when they come to regret this that things go wrong.
Most specifically Republican Senator Lennox whose greed for power oversteps its mark, causing his son to have become an opium fiend, his wife a women in denial strung out on alcohol, and his daughter, Kathryn, the only sane one in the family, and her life is on the line for that very reason - That her training as a psychiatrist is called upon to aid the Spooks is without doubt, as far as its leader Morton Chapel is concerned. Though how many of them will make it out alive is indeed in doubt, and their eventual success a moot point.
Captivating, stepping over potential clichés and continuing to deliver a cool period occult thriller. This has been an interesting two part debut that bodes well for future volumes.
