Blake & Mortimer sixth Cont

The Adventures of Blake & Mortimer Book 9: The Sarcophagi of the Sixth Continent Part 1 By André Juillard & Yves Sente, Cinebook

1958, AND Professor Mortimer is in Brussels, arranging the British pavilion for an international exposition, only there appears to be a spy around, so it’s a good job his friend, the secret service’s Blake is on hand. But who is behind it, if not the Russians? And what do experiments in the Arctic Circle have to do with electric devices malfunctioning around the world?

The answer may lie buried in the past, when a young Mortimer returned to his beloved India to find it changed, the course of the British Empire failing though not as much as what he considered lifelong friendships. There is also love in the air, and an Asiatic villain clothed in the same darkness that gave us the likes of Fu Manchu.

Portraying the characters’ pasts allows a brisker paced action adventure to take place that evokes the work of Kipling and counterpoints the contemporary setting of the main event in the 50s with its cold war thriller feel to strong effect. As Part 1 of 2 this story is left unfinished, and readers will be eager to see it through to the conclusion.
