Blake & Mortimer Book 8

The Adventures of Blake & Mortimer: Book 8, by André Juillard & Yves Sente, Cinebook

72 DENSE full colour pages, averaging 11 panels a page with much wordage in the speech balloons there’s much to take in during this adventure that begins with deadly bacteria from space brought to Earth on a Russian rocket.

Thereafter, the E.P. Jacobs created characters play a cat and mouse cold war shadow game, freeing captured spies, forced to let others go free, all while trying to solve the mystery of assorted murders and the operatives who may be behind it.

As the Behind the Scenes feature in the book reveals Juillard went heavy on the historical research for this retro-fitted book, and inserted many continuity aspects that long term fans of the series could appreciate. Sente’s art is clear and precise, detailed for effectiveness with slightly cartoony in terms of facial expressions to allow for instant visual recognition in what can often be small panels to allow as much story continuity on each page.

Slightly heavy going for those new to the series, read in smaller chunks until the novice Blake & Mortimer reader gets to grips with characters and the affairs at hand, the resulting pay-off works well.
