Long John Silver Book II – Neptune

Long John Silver Book II – Neptune, by Xavier Dorison & Mathhieu Lauffray, Cinebook

ALL ABOARD for a rum tale of dark deeds done in the night, treacheries that bide their time and the bite of a cat-of-nine-tails that hastens the inevitable...

Lady Vivian Hastings sails towards the Amazon intent on finding her husband, though not out of love but in search of the riches he’s told his own brother can be found hidden there. To this end she has secretly employed one Long John Silver, whose temper is tested as the Neptune holds its own under storm and raging sea, but more so the aforementioned brother-in-law Captain Hastings who threatens all and will soon prove true to his word for Silver’s not in good health and the cut-throats he’s gathered to his side are fewer in number than he’d prefer, and not one of them able to navigate the Neptune safely across the sea should they call Hastings’ bluff and mutiny too soon.

This is a tale of people made of flesh and blood told in fully-painted colour over two-dimensional sheets of paper: richly evocative, brimming with dark humour and human tragedy and often on the same page; a cast of well scribed characters who you will despair, despise and on occasion find compassion for.

If you’ve a penchant for line art by the likes of American Silver Age creators such Brunner, Ploog, Sutton, Adams or Wrightson, then come out from the woodwork and feast on this modern European epic following on indirectly from the classic Treasure Island, because by the time you’ve come to the last page you’ll be itching with anticipation for the next book in the series.
