Graphic Novel Review... Lucky Luke & The Daily Star

Lucky Luke Book 41: The Daily Star, by Morris, Fauche & Leturgie, Cinebook

FIRST COLLECTED into album form in 1983, Lucky Luke creator Morris illustrated Le Daily Star, as it was first titled, over a script by X. Fauche & J. Leturgie. Chronologically, a relatively modern book in the series.

Historically however, it plays fast and loose with reality basing its premise on American newspaper editor/publisher and later politician Horace Greeley but keeps to the Lucky Luke tradition of low-key humour, running gags and cool sequential art that knows how to play the comedy and adventure scenes (even when drawn in a cartoon style) to great effect.

Suffice to state that while bathing in a river and finding himself covered in black ink, Luke comes across Greeley who’s been run out of the local town for printing the truth about watered-down beer in a saloon and promptly had his printing press tossed in said river for good measure. Our hero offers to help him, and the usual shenanigans ensue as assorted lowlifes try to prevent the daily news reaching its readers, including a rival newspaper being set up that Greeley does what any good reporter does and reports about!

Fun stuff, pretty much always.
