Graphic Novel Review... Lucky Luke Book 39
Lucky Luke Book 39: The Man From Washington, by Achde & Gerra, Cinebook
AMERICA IS looking to elect a new president but corruption is rife...
There are two different candidates the Republican Party is considering; one’s an a rich Texan oil tycoon looking to buy votes and the other’s henpecked by his teetotal wife. Who gets the nomination and at the end of the day the keys to the Whitehouse? You’ll have to read this 48 page volume to find out, and along the way grab yourself a smile or two.
What’s Lucky Luke’s purpose in all this? Well, after a shootout with a very young Billy the Kid, the man who shoots faster than his own shadow is hired to ensure Senator Hayes isn’t gunned down along the campaign trail, and it’s one where the old iron horse trails its way across the wild west, stopping off at various junctions for calamities and jokes alike to ensue.
The creative team of Achde and Gerra don’t disappoint, tweaking the character and the series here and there for a more modern age, and while there are certain jokes possibly only an older readership might grasp it also ensures some of that Goscinny writing flavour remains. There is some nice clear lined art evoking the style of Lucky Luke’s creator, Morris but in a slightly slicker mode.
