Graphic Novel Review... Lucky Luke and The Daltons Redeem Themselves?

Lucky Luke Book 36: The Daltons Redeem Themselves, by Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook

MANY BOOK publishers have attempted to attract British readers to the western comedy that is Lucky Luke, but they have all failed, with the exception of Cinebook. They appear to have either found previously closeted Francophiles aplenty in this possibly xenophobic land or come along at a time when humour is needed by the truckload.

Perhaps it’s also that the translations are much better? I confess I don’t know on that score, my only previous reading of Lucky Luke prior to Cinebook’s collections were as a newspaper strip over in Portugal many moons ago – Still got the cutting from it, still looks funny, still can’t read it!

So what of Book 36? It’s those bad boys the Daltons again, and the United States Supreme Court has this crazy idea that if they let prisoners out early on probation and they commit no crimes for a certain period they can be fully pardoned. It’s a similar scenario to the recent Book 34: The Daltons Always on the Run, but played out a bit differently.

Lucky Luke is present to keep an eye on the Daltons, and the tried and tested routine of running gags played and varied until the very last drop of corny humour is pulled out of them is the order of the day.
