Graphic Novel Review... Lucky Luke & The Singing Wire

Lucky Luke Book 35: The Singing Wire, by Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook

WHETHER INVENTED for this story or true, the singing wire of this title is the sound the Indians say the telegraph pole cables would make as the wind ran through them. In these day of Ipads, web cameras and the like it’s hard for kids to appreciate a world without mobile phones, let alone going back to when the height of technology was clicking away on an electric pad and then being able to translate into a medium understood verbally some miles away...

Of course, the Indians already allegedly used smoke signals for long distance communication so it probably never bothered them, unless for the purposes of this here comic book story.

The book starts off suggesting this could be the end of the road for Lucky Luke, because if they can connect telegraph poles straight across the USA there’ll be no need for him to ride the pony express... But then he gets hired to help it all happen. Cue fate to play its hand badly; that or someone amongst the crew putting up the poles working for the other side – See, there’s a bet on to see if those coming from the East will beat those from the West joining up in the middle first.

A totally linear story, with typically silly running gags and well-held punchlines placed strategically along the way.
