Graphic Novel Review... Lucky Luke Book 34 with The Daltons On The Run!

Lucky Luke Book 34: The Daltons Always on the Run, by Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook

CINEBOOK RUN their Lucky Luke series outside chronological order. While the purist collector may have a whinge about the business mind can see the bonuses as earlier works may appear dated to some of today’s kids and put them off. Personally, the reader in me quite enjoys the pick and mix of styles, and differing writer collaborations.

Book 34 has rather an interesting cover, for while its foreground images are outlined in brushed ink the backgrounds appear painted, and in a looser style giving it something of children’s book look and quality.

Inside, the story itself reads as if two stories have been put together. The first lasting 12 pages wherein a new president has a madcap idea of all prisoners being released in an amnesty, leading to The Dalton Brothers released too but decideding to plot, scheme and inevitably find themselves back in the clink! Thereafter, while the story continues it feels a little out of sorts in parts: to cut to the chase The Daltons escape again, get captured by Red Indians but then team-up with them, the cavalry at a fort wait around while Lucky Luke works out how to save the day (aided by the fort’s dumb dog used for further comic relief) even as stage coaches get robbed.

You can work out the inevitable happy ending for yourselves, even if not the connivance by which Lucky Luke makes it happen.

Not the best book in the series, but some laughs along the way.
