Lucky Luke & The Grand Duke
Lucky Luke Book 29: The Grand Duke, by Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook
GRAND DUKE Leonid is in America to sign a commercial treaty on behalf of the Tsar of Russia, only the big lug that is the duke wants to get the full American cultural experience and since this series is set in the wild west of yesteryear a raucous time is pretty much guaranteed.
Naturally, no one in Washington wants any harm to come to the duke so they put the best man they can think of on the job to keep the non-English speaking Russian safe and sound. Enter the title character of this book, Lucky Luke.
Initially starting like some parody of the old Alias Smith & Jones western TV series, it soon shifts into more familiar Lucky Luke territory as the fastest comic strip straight shooter in the west goes to outlandish lengths to keep the duke safe and sound.
As the front cover shows Duke Leonid takes a fancy to a show girl whose boss is a crook and an attempt to kidnap the Russian is attempted. This ends up with assorted cavalry folk having to disguise thermselves as Red Indians before the cultural tour is over and Lucky Luke can let out a sigh of relief.
What’s a nice touch about this particular book is that Luke himself is portrayed beyond his usual laconic, laidback self, and shown getting annoyed at various points, not least a running gag about him wanting a quiet soak in the bath.
