Lucky Luke & The Dalton Cousins
Lucky Luke Book 28: The Dalton Cousins, by Rene Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook
SHEER SILLINESS from start to finish; but it kind of works...
The Dalton Cousins want to live up to their more famous relatives’ reputations as gun-toting outlaws; the fact that Lucky Luke has out-gunned said more famous relatives over a series of earlier books doesn’t seem to enter the picture... These boys ain’t bright and they think they can take him on.
Well they try, repeatedly, and fail repeatedly, so they teach themselves to be tough, and that fails. Then they hold a town to ransom at which point Luke throws them a curve when he agrees to team-up with them.
It all comes to a bad end and like the age-old gag of a banana waiting to be slipped on you can tell when the jokes are coming but it’s the way one twist on those old jokes are made (and they were fine wines when this book first came out in 1971) that raises a smile.
A brisk read, and yet time worth spent.
