Lucky Luke in... The Stagecoach

Lucky Luke Book 25: The Stagecoach,

By Rene Goscinny & Morris, Cinebook

WELLS FARGO & Co are having their stagecoaches attacked and the gold on board stolen, so they employ Lucky Luke to ride shotgun and protect the next coach out of Denver, Colorado heading to San Francisco. So far so good but you know it’s not going to last.

Wells Fargo & Co then go and promote the fact, not only by putting up posters but telegraphing ahead with the news – On the one hand it could ward off would be criminals but on the other it could convince them that there’s that much gold on board it’s worth the risk. Naturally it proves to be the latter.

The stagecoach also has a cast of oddball passengers, most notably an unlucky card shark called Cat Thumbs, and the stagecoach driver, or whip as they’re termed, is Hank Bully; both of whom make welcome partners in this range roaming adventure across the USA.

It’s a series of well disciplined running gags of the corny-comedy variety, but still so well timed in their delivery across the comics page that though the jokes are old time doesn’t prevent a smile being raised.

Injuns, countless gunmen on the highway, the notorious Black Bart, plenty of potatoes and lard... What more could you ask for?
